 What is a solar storm?    Solar storms, also called geomagnetic storms, are distortions in the Earth's magnetic field. These fireworks are caused by the sun's activity. Solar storms occur when large amounts of charged particles are sent from the sun towards the Earth, which can affect our satellites, communications systems and power grids.   How do solar storms form?   Solar flares:  Solar flares are sudden releases of magnetic energy in the Sun's atmosphere.
